Initial research

The 19th and 20th centuries saw the start of scientific research into the healing properties of hops. Many of the effects known for a long time were documented at that time. The effectiveness of hops e.g. as a tranquilliser and sleeping agent is deemed to have meantime been proven. The positive effects on the gastrointestinal tract were researched in more detail. It was noted that hops contain a so-called “phytoestrogen”, a plant-based form of the female sexual hormone. Use against infections, e.g. of the ear, has meantime also been scientifically established.
