Cancer prevention

In 1999, an American research group described potential anticancer activities of xanthohumol for the first time. These findings have meantime been confirmed at the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg. Results available so far are mainly from tests with cell lines and isolated organs. Research on living organisms is still ongoing.

Especially promising is the potential of xanthohumol in cancer chemoprevention. This involves the use of natural substances, with the objective of inhibiting development of cancer before tumour growth.

Xanthohumol showed itself effective against colon-, breast-, ovarian-, prostate-carcinoma, and leukaemia. It was active in all phases of carcinogenesis.

The bitter substances contained in hops might also help in fighting cancer. They also inhibit growth of tumour cells, induce cell death in a few cases and inhibit formation of new blood vessels.
